Today, we’re going to be reviewing (G)I-DLE’s comeback with Hwaa, from why it’s familiar, to why it’s not familiar and frankly everything in between!
Disclaimer: I do not accuse anyone of plagiarism in this video, we’re here to talk about the comeback and similarities because it’s fun and it’s not meant to be malicious. You’re welcome to fight me in the comments.
Hwa is part of (G)i-dle’s album i-burn, and honestly I was really excited for this comeback, I’m not a stan, but when I saw the music video teaser, I truly thought it was so gorgeous, like the filmography of it all paired with the instrumental just set up a really beautiful scene that I was so excited to see.
So, we’ve previously discussed some similarities that were brought up with their second teaser, and I wanted to go over them again while pointing out a few things. Now keep in mind, similarities are not inherently bad, even taking inspiration isn’t inherently bad. I said I would wait for the music video before speculating further, so let’s do it.
So first up, we had Minnie’s hair, which was similar to Lisa’s hair in How You Like That. Now, there are only so many hairstyles that one can do, and I know the timing is pretty close together, but I mean Bom has also done this hairstyle in Can’t Nobody, and I’m sure Minnie won’t be the last to do red hair with bangs. In my opinion, it’s a cute similarity but that’s about it.
As for the snow scene, which was featured in How You Like That with an icy platform, snow and white outfits and similarly in Hwaa, with an icy platform, snow and white outfits, I mean of course it’s similar. However, a winter theme isn’t inherently owned by anyone. Everglow in Dun Dun also used a similar type of set, and we also have MCND with Ice age, Itzy with Not Shy, surprisingly not Icy, Red Velvet Bad Boy and 2NE1 Missing You who also had these snow elements. So though aesthetically it’s quite similar, though the colors and overall setup are quite similar, I do feel as though their particular snow scene played a much bigger part within the music video, like it was very present throughout the music video and really set the tone. Their outfits are of course also different, it’s an overall darker and different vibe, though aesthetically it looks quite similar, but let me know what you think about that!
